OUR STORY
The owner and technician, Brian Terrell, grew up in Carlsbad, graduated from La Costa Canyon High School in 1998, and Sonoma State University in 2003.
He worked various sales jobs for large corporations until 2012. His father purchased this shop, formerly called Ace Smog, back in 2007. Brian wanted to help his Dad retire, so he went to smog school, received excellent training from an experienced BAR Referee, and took over on September 6th, 2012.
Brian wanted to build his own brand with the goal of providing quick and powerful service, so Lightning Smog was born.

A Legacy of Service
Our story begins in the late 1930s, when Rand Lawson established a gas station known as The Flying A along Coast Highway—then the main route connecting Los Angeles to San Diego. Thanks to its prime location, the station became a popular stop for travelers heading to the Del Mar Race Track, welcoming notable visitors such as Bing Crosby and Laurel & Hardy.
In the mid-1950s, the property changed hands to Jimmy Wickerd, who operated it as a Texaco gas station before selling it to retired Marine Chester “Chet” Holcomb. By the late 1960s, Lee Street became the owner and quickly became a beloved local figure, known for his friendly personality and strong connection with the community.
In 1985, Bob Morace took ownership and renamed the repair shop Bob’s Carbs, continuing to operate the site as a Texaco station. As the business grew, Bob relocated in the early 2000s to accommodate expansion.
Soon after, Sam Nejad purchased the location, closed the gas station, and introduced Ace Smog. In 2007, Hugh Terrell acquired the business and later passed it on to his son, Brian Terrell, on September 6, 2012. This marked a new chapter, as Brian rebranded the business to Lightning Smog.
Under Brian’s leadership, the company has built a strong reputation for honesty, efficiency, and customer-first service. Over the years, the business has continued to expand—adding Lightning Auto Registration in 2016 and Lightning Clean Truck Check in 2025.
Today, Lightning Smog, Auto Registration, and Clean Truck Check stands as a trusted and leading smog and registration facility in Oceanside. We are proud to serve our community, support cleaner air, and continue a legacy that spans generations.
